# Configuring Map Settings

## Map Types & Options

### Changing Map Type

1. In the GAP Portal, click the <i class="fa-bars">:bars:</i> icon on the top left-hand side of the map.
2. Click the "Map Types" tab.
3. Select a map type from the list.

### Setting Default Map View

You configure the default location and zoom level for the GAP Portal map by setting your default viewport.  The map will always revert back to the location / zoom level you set when navigating around the Portal.

1. In the GAP Portal, click "Options".
2. Click "My Profile".
3. Click "Portal Settings".
4. From the "Custom Default Viewport" drop-down list, select "Use Current Map as New Custom Viewport".
5. Pan / zoom map as required.
6. Click the "OK" button.

To revert the default viewport:

1. In the GAP Portal, click "Options".
2. Click "My Profile".
3. Click "Portal Settings".
4. From the "Custom Default Viewport" drop-down list, select "Use Default Viewport".
5. Click the "OK" button.

### Configuring Track Display Settings

1. In the GAP Portal, click "Options".
2. Click "My Profile".
3. Click "Portal Settings".
4. Select the line style you want to use from the "Track Line Style" drop-down list.
5. Click the "OK" button.

### Configuring Icon Display Settings

1. In the GAP Portal, click "Options".
2. Click "My Profile".
3. Click "Portal Settings".
4. To turn device labels on or off, check or uncheck the "Show Device Labels on Map" check box as required.
5. To turn device icon clustering on or off, check or uncheck the "Enable Map Icon Clustering" check box as required.
6. To turn intelligence (travel alert) icon clustering on or off, check or uncheck the "Insights Intelligence Clustering" check box as required.
7. Click the "OK" button.

### Configuring Animation

By default, devices in an emergency state are shown on the GAP Portal map with a pulsating animation.  This can be turned off for your user account as follows:

1. In the GAP Portal, click "Options".
2. Click "My Profile".
3. Click "Portal Settings".
4. Uncheck the "Enable Emergency Animation" check box.
5. Click the "OK" button.

## Overlays

The following GAP data can be overlayed on the GAP Portal map to provide additional context:

* Facilities
* Geofences
* Points of Interest
* KML Layers

### Viewing Facilities

1. In the GAP Portal, click the <i class="fa-bars">:bars:</i> icon on the top left-hand side of the map.
2. Click the "Overlays" tab.
3. Check the "Show Facilities" check box.

### Viewing Geofences

This feature requires the **View Geofences** permission.

1. In the GAP Portal, click the <i class="fa-bars">:bars:</i> icon on the top left-hand side of the map.
2. Click the "Overlays" tab.
3. Check the "Show Geofences" check box.

### Viewing Points of Interest

This feature requires the **View Points of Interest** permission.

1. In the GAP Portal, click the <i class="fa-bars">:bars:</i> icon on the top left-hand side of the map.
2. Click the "Overlays" tab.
3. Check the "Show Points of Interest" check box.
4. Optionally, if you want to view labels for Points of Interest, check the "Show Points of Interest Labels" check box.

### Viewing KML Layers

1. In the GAP Portal, click the <i class="fa-bars">:bars:</i> icon on the top left-hand side of the map.
2. Click the "Overlays" tab.
3. Check the "Show KML Layers" check box.

## Weather

### Viewing Weather Maps

Some weather maps offer limited geographical coverage.

1. In the GAP Portal, click the <i class="fa-bars">:bars:</i> icon on the top left-hand side of the map.
2. Click the "Weather" tab.
3. Under the "Forecast" section, select a map layer.
4. Under the "Map Overlays" section, select whether the map you chose should show current conditions ("Now") or the forecasted conditions 24, 48 or 72 hours in the future.

### Viewing Weather Forecasts

You can view the current conditions and a forecast for a specific location using the Weather Information Tool.

1. In the GAP Portal, click the <i class="fa-bars">:bars:</i> icon on the top left-hand side of the map.
2. Click the "Weather" tab.
3. Click "Weather Information Tool".
4. Drop the pin on the map at the desired location.

## Tools & Controls

### Using Map Tools

The following map tools are available:

* Search Map Location
* Slide Time Filter
* Measure Distance
* Time Information

#### Searching for Locations

Use the Search Map Location to find specific places.

1. In the GAP Portal, click the <i class="fa-bars">:bars:</i> icon on the top left-hand side of the map.
2. Click "Search Map Location".  The tool will appear in the top left-hand side of the map, next to the "Map Settings" button.
3. Enter the search term in the text box and click the <i class="fa-magnifying-glass">:magnifying-glass:</i> (search) icon or select a result from the list.

#### Slide Time Filtering

Use the Slide Time Filter tool to quickly show or hide devices on the map, based on when they last sent a message to GAP.

The Slide Time Filter tool only filters what is displayed on the map, it does not change what is listed in the Devices screen or other places in the GAP Portal.

1. In the GAP Portal, click the <i class="fa-bars">:bars:</i> icon on the top left-hand side of the map.
2. Click "Slide Time Filter".  The tool will appear at the bottom centre of the map.
3. Drag the slider to the right to filter out devices that haven't reported for the specified period of time.
4. To close the tool, click the <i class="fa-x">:x:</i> (close) button.

#### Time Information

Use the Time Information tool to show the local time and time zone for a specific place on the map.

1. In the GAP Portal, click the <i class="fa-bars">:bars:</i> icon on the top left-hand side of the map.
2. Click "Time Information".
3. Click on a place on the map.
4. The current time at that location, applicable time zone and UTC time will be shown at the bottom centre of the map.
5. Drag the <i class="fa-clock">:clock:</i> (clock) icon to another place on the map to see the time information for that location.
6. To close the tool, click the <i class="fa-x">:x:</i> (close) button.

### Turning Map Controls On / Off

Use of certain map controls can slow down map performance when there are a large number of devices displayed.

The following map controls are available:

| Control           | Description                                                                                                                                                                     |
| ----------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Zoom Buttons      | Click to zoom in or out.  Displayed at the top right-hand side corner of the map, under "Map Settings".                                                                         |
| Map Scale         | Displays the map scale at the bottom left-hand side of the map.                                                                                                                 |
| Mini Map          | Displays a smaller map in the top right-hand corner at a lesser zoom level for providing context.                                                                               |
| Edge Markers      | Display arrows pointing in the direction of nearby devices not shown in the current map view.  Clicking on the arrow moves the map to the devices in question.                  |
| Mouse Position    | Displays the current location (latitude / longitude) of the mouse pointer in various co-ordinate formats, as well as the current UTC time and map zoom level.                   |
| Quick Zoom Button | Click to zoom the map to the most appropriate level to display all devices.  Displayed at the top right-hand side corner of the map, under "Map Settings" and the zoom buttons. |
| Refresh Timer     | Displays a countdown timer in the bottom right-hand corner of the map to show when the next data refresh is due.                                                                |
| Grid              | Displays a latitude / longitude grid.                                                                                                                                           |
| Day And Night     | Overlays a shadow showing where it is currently nighttime.                                                                                                                      |
| Map Legend        | Displayed by clicking on the <i class="fa-circle-question">:circle-question:</i> icon on the bottom right-hand side of the map.                                                 |

To change which map controls are displayed:

1. In the GAP Portal, click the <i class="fa-bars">:bars:</i> icon on the top left-hand side of the map.
2. Click the "Controls" tab.
3. Toggle the relevant control(s) on or off as required.
