# Monitoring & Check-Ins

There are two approaches to monitoring offered by GAP:

* Monitoring (also called "Monitor Me")
* Check-In Schedules

The fundamental difference between the two is that monitoring mode is primarily user-initiated and configured, whereas Check-In Schedules are administrator-initiated and policy-based.

A check-in is a message sent from a device that indicates that the user is OK, and fulfils the requirements of monitoring mode or the Check-In Schedule.

If the user misses a check-in, their device will be marked as overdue in the GAP Portal.

## Monitoring / Monitor Me

A user can initiate monitoring mode / Monitor Me when they want to be asked to check in at a certain interval (which they can configure).

See [GAP Guardian v3 User Guide](/devices/gap-guardian-app/gap-guardian-v3-user-guide.md#monitor-me) for more information on using and configuring Monitor Me in the GAP Guardian smartphone app.

## Check-In Schedules

A Check-In Schedule is a series of times at which a user must send a check-in message.

Schedules can be configured to specify an interval (for example, every 6 hours) or certain times on certain days (for example, at 09:00 and 13:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays).

Schedules must first be created, then assigned to devices or groups and finally enabled.

See [Managing Check-In Schedules](/administration/notifications/managing-check-in-schedules.md) for more information on creating and assigning Check-In Schedules via the GAP Admin app.

## Manual Check-Ins <a href="#howtoperformamanualcheckin" id="howtoperformamanualcheckin"></a>

You can manually check in a user (for example, if their device is not working) via the "Manual Check-In" button under the "Check-In Actions" section:

1. In the GAP Portal, click "Devices" from the banner menu.
2. Click the name of the device you wish to manually check in.
3. Under the "Check-In Actions" section, click "Manual Check-In".
4. If you want to include a location with the manual check-in, click "Include Location" and click on the map or search for a location via the "Search" box.
5. Click the "OK" button.
6. Click the "Yes, Check In" button.

## Overdue Alerts

When a device goes overdue, the device enters an "overdue" state in the GAP Portal.

If there are event notifications configured at the device or tenant-level relating to overdue alerts, these will be triggered. See [Event Notifications Reference](/administration/notifications/event-notifications-reference.md#check-in) and [Managing Event Notifications](/administration/notifications/managing-event-notifications.md) for more information.

If a check-in message is received whilst a device is in an overdue state, the device state will clear.
